Human Figures
Bello Naturale
1 Foot Tall
Copied from a large sculpture in a cemetery in Italy by Lorenzo Bartolini. Carved from a block of bass wood my brother Jim gave me for Christmas.

Daughters of Poseidon
AKA Standing Invocation AKA Two Naked Females Holding a Giant Sea Shell Over Their Heads. Carved from a block of bass wood from my brother Jim.

FIgas and Hand
A very unique body sign in Brazil is the “figa”, represented by inserting the thumb between the middle and index finger. A figa is a good luck charm. I carved one of these for my sister before her life threatening surgery in 1993. The one carved from cherry wood was for Sue and the picture of two figas together shows the one I carved for Kimme and the one I carved for Kyle (one left hand and one right hand!). The hand with fingers pointed upward was carved for my sister Pat; she hangs necklaces/jewelry on it.

Big Bertha
In the gallery of photos below you can see phase 1, phase 2, phase 3, and phase 4 of this carving. In the first there is a block of wood where the face and neck contours are beginning to be evident. In the second, you can see rough outlines of the ears and facial features. In the third, features become more defined. And in the fourth, the final product!

Lady from Haiti
The lady is carved from a hardwood from southern Mexico. I used a hammer and chisel, no sandpaper necessary!
