About
Eudovic of the North
When I was in the Peace Corps in Brazil in the 1960’s, one of the prisons in the town of Recife, believe it or not, allowed its inmates to do wood carving. Occasionally they would have an art/craft fair so that the general public could see and purchase what they had made. I went on a Saturday and was warned that the asking prices for the carvings would be too high and to bargain. I saw something I wanted to buy, a figa, and asked the artist – How much? He said 7,000 cruzeiros which meant about three and a half US dollars. I bought it immediately! Then I saw the carving of a saint - I can’t remember which one. The prisoner told me it was a good likeness of the saint because he had a photograph of him! Asking price - 7,000 cruzeiros, same as the figa.
That experience stayed in the back of my mind; I knew someday I would do some carving. When my son Kyle was in scouts, we worked together on a small wooden car that would be used in their troop races. That got me hooked really. I picked up a carving knife and never looked back.
When Kyle and I were in St. Lucia some years later, we visited the shop and gallery of a famous woodcarver named Eudovic. Kyle started calling me Old Man Eudovic of the North. I shortened it to Eudovic of the North, EON. For Christmas Kyle and Kimme had a shirt monogrammed with my new moniker.
So I am EON AKA RLD….and…ImaCarver.
See below the carvings that inspired me to be a carver of wood: The Saint carved by the prisoner in Recife, the crab and banana tree carved by Eudovic in Santa Lucia.

SD says: How fun it was looking at all EON’s carvings. So very amazing. Really enjoyed the pictures along with the stories. Talk about strolling down memory lane! I remember some of these carvings while they were still a work in progress when company came to call! What a gift! I love them all. First favorite is “our Fish” proudly displayed in our home. Second favorite is the mermaid and the figa…all the figas! Still in second place is Big Bertha! The VW bus when finished may move to first place!!! Great job, Chris Turner, on the website. Easy to maneuver around. Thank you! Such an inspiration! Thank you, EON for carving and then giving up some of your work. Best of all thanks for sharing! Big email hug to everyone.
PDK says: Chris, This is a great website You did such a good job. The carvings are wonderful, EON. I love the narratives along with the carvings. There is nothing like EON’s stories. Thanks for sending, Mary.
KKG says: I like the duck, mermaid rising, the rabbit in hand, oh, hell, all of them! The figa carvings speak to me for a strange reason. Several years ago I noticed that I wake up each morning with my thumb tucked between two fingers - the I’ve got your “nose” position. I started paying attention and noticed that, right as I’m falling asleep each night, my hands curl into light fists and I tuck my thumb between two fingers. Weird! So, yeah, I like the figas too! Thank you to EON, for sharing your beautiful work! Great job on the site, Chris!
LT says: I played around a little bit with ideas for an imacarver logo. The one I like the best so far is a rectangle shaped block of rough wood with the word imacarver carved on it. For that to happen either EON would have to actually carve it or someone from the artistically talented Donovan clan could draw it. Any takers? Other logo ideas? I like Chris’s idea. Offer the carvings for sale at $1,000,000 each. Wonderful job, EON!
JD says. Great site! Great carvings! Only one correction, that of the 5 Eared Sam discovery. I will tell it to everyone when we get together soon… (very picky and shallow correction. A need I have!)
JK says: Great stuff, EON, and a great website! I, too, have the artistic gene. I once traced my hand and made it look like a turkey….
RE says: These are really cool! EON, do you take requests? I’ve been looking for an owl….
CD says: Great job, Chris! I used to love watching Uncle Bob carve on the porch whenever we were all hanging out in north Georgia or the lake house (nostalgia!) My favorite has, and always will be, the footed bowl, but I also love the mermaid, the one that’s like a human/fish centaur. I dig it.
CT says: Hi, CD, Bob did all the real work. :) My favorite is the mermaid/human. I think it says something about how everything living is connected… EON, how does one start carving something?
ET says: Love all of this! There have always been stories a plenty of the carvings coming from EON’s mind and hands, so it is wonderful to see them all in one place. We really like the figures and inlay pieces. Makes me wish I had a creative outlet. You are one talented individual EON! It is also great to hear from everyone. It’s a weird time right now and this has been a great way to bring us all together. So, thank you for that Bob, Chris, and mom.
And EON says…. Wow! Thanks for the positive feedback. Your comments made me Happy, Happy, Happy. And thanks Mary and Chris for your work and persistence. You did well. First point to remember if you start woodcarving: When you cut your finger and Sherry finds out she will make you go and get a tetanus shot. Second point: carving while sitting in the passenger seat on a road trip while Sue is driving you will probably cut your pants a few times. Point three: You can buy kitchen gloves made with fiberglass fibers that protect your fingers. EON AKA ImaCarver
